The Cistercian abbeys

Founded by Cistercian monks, the Thoronet Abbey was mainly built between 1160 and 1190. It constitutes one of the purest and finest examples of the Romanesque style in Provence. Its austere beauty, proportions and powerful volumes exhale serenity and plenitude; the ideal conditions for meditation.

The Sénanque Abbey, situated in the valley of Senancole, is also an architectural jewel of Romanesque art, surrounded by fields of lavender

The Silvacane Abbey is situated in La Roque d'Anthéron, beside the Durance. The monastery was built in the 11th century in the marshes, hence the name “Sylva Cana”, the “forest of reeds”.
